Self-storage guides · Static and dynamic codes

How long should an access code stay useful?

Choose fixed or changing codes to suit your customers and the checks your entrances need.

A printed QR can be convenient. A changing code can limit the life of a saved copy. A second check adds another requirement. Each addresses a different question.

Fixed credentials stay familiar

A static PIN or printed QR remains the same until it is changed or revoked. That can suit customers who need a simple, familiar way in. It also means a copy may remain useful while the credential is valid. Permissions and prompt removal of access still matter.

Rotating QR limits the life of a saved image

A dynamic QR changes automatically. A screenshot stops working once that code expires. A copy of the current code can still be used during its validity window, so individual permissions and any additional checks still matter.

A changing PIN customers can type

Smart PIN gives customers a temporary code to type when that is more convenient than scanning. They find the current code in the Bearbox app or your own app and enter it on the keypad before it expires.

Authenticator codes add another option

An authenticator app generates changing codes for supported authentication checks. These can provide an additional requirement alongside another credential. Check which combination the entrance requires: an expiring code alone does not automatically provide multiple authentication factors.

Compare the job each control does

Consider how customers arrive and what the entrance needs to check. These options differ in how they are presented, how long a copied value remains useful, and whether another check is required.

Compare the job each control does
Control or serviceWhat it does
Fixed PIN or QRA consistent credential for repeated use, with access removed or changed when needed.
Dynamic QRA scanning credential whose previous values expire.
Smart PINA temporary PIN shown in the Bearbox app or your own app.
Authenticator codeA changing code for a supported authentication check.
QR plus PINBoth configured checks must succeed before access is granted.

Invite a person instead of forwarding a code

If customers need someone else to visit, individual invitations provide a clearer record than shared credentials. Where Bearbox access sharing is enabled, invited people have their own profiles and credentials. Review access when a colleague leaves or no longer needs the unit.

Questions about static and dynamic codes?

Does an expired screenshot grant access?

A previous dynamic QR is no longer a valid credential once it expires. Other access checks and permissions still apply.

Should every customer use the same credential type?

Choose around customer needs, entrances and security requirements. Fixed and changing credentials have different practical uses.
